Gold Napoleon 40 Franc Coin, 1811

This Napoleon 40 Franc coin is dated 1811. These gold coins were issued between 1807 - 1813. The obverse features the laureate head of Napoleon I, with the words "NAPOLEON EMPEREUR" placed either side of the image, whilst the reverse shows a laurel wreath with the value "40 FRANCS" inside and the words "EMPIRE FRANCAIS" and the date around the edge.  The "A" at the bottom edge denotes the Paris mint and the rooster denotes the mint master Charles-Pierre de l'Espine (1797–1821). Pierre-Joseph Tiolier, who was born in London in 1763, was appointed as the engraver-general from 1803 to 1816 at the Paris Mint.  During his time at the Paris Mint he engraved the patterns for the Bonaparte-First Consul coins.
