2026 Gold American Buffalo – 20th Anniversary
The 2026 Gold American Buffalo marks the 20th anniversary of one of the United States Mint’s most celebrated bullion programs. Introduced in 2006, the American Buffalo became the Mint’s first 24-karat (.9999 fine) gold coin, setting a new benchmark for purity and design in modern American bullion.
Struck in 1 troy ounce of pure gold and issued in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, the 2026 release carries added significance as the series enters its third decade. Honouring two decades of craftsmanship and American heritage, the coin continues the legacy of James Earle Fraser’s classic design — a tribute to the nation’s Western history and the enduring reputation of gold as a trusted store of value.
1oz Gold American Buffalo Coin Design
The design of the American Buffalo gold bullion coin is a modified version of James Earle Fraser's design for the Indian Head nickel (Type 1), issued in early 1913. After a raised mound of dirt below the animal on the reverse was reduced, the Type 2 variation continued to be minted for the rest of 1913 and every year until 1938, except for 1922, 1932, and 1933 when no nickels were struck. Generally, Fraser's Indian Head nickel design is regarded as among the best designs of any U.S. coin. The same design also was used on the 2001 Smithsonian commemorative coin. The United States Mint Background
The U.S. Mint is the sole manufacturer of legal tender coins within the United States. It was set up by Congress in Philadelphia with the Coinage Act of 1792 and originally placed within the Department of State. The first general-circulation coin of the United States, the Fugio cent, was produced in 1787 based on the continental dollar.
