1oz Gold Kangaroo Coin Background
The 1oz Gold Australian Kangaroo (Australian Gold Nugget) is a gold bullion coin minted by the Perth Mint. The coins are available through Bleyer in denominations of 1/10oz, 1/4oz, 1oz of 24 carat gold. The nugget has legal tender status in Australia and is one of few legal tender bullion gold coins to change their design every year, another being the Chinese National coin. This and their limited annual mintage may, unlike for many other bullion coins, raise their numismatic value over the value of gold used. The Gold Nugget Coin series was introduced in 1986 by Gold Corporation, a company wholly owned by the government of Western Australia, more commonly known by its trading name The Perth Mint.2026 Australian Kangaroo Design
The 2026 Kangaroo coin’s reverse features two kangaroos leaping across water, with ripples, splashes, and a distant mountain landscape adding depth to the scene. A privy mark bearing the number “40” commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Australian Nugget, Australia’s first official legal tender gold coin series.
The design also includes the inscriptions “KANGAROO”, The Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark, as well as the coin’s weight, fineness, and 2026 year-date.
The obverse showcases the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, together with the monetary denomination.
The Perth Mint Background
The Perth Mint opened in 1899 in response to the discovery of rich gold deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. The heritage building was situated in the heart of Perth, the capital and largest city of Western Australia. It was Australia's third branch of Britain's Royal Mint - the others being the Sydney Mint and the Melbourne Mint (both closed). In 1970, the authority for The Perth Mint was transferred to the State of Western Australia. The Perth Mint gold and silver bullion coins have been issued as legal tender under the authority of the Australian Federal Government ever since.
