Beowulf & Grendel's Mother Coin Background

This is the second coin in the 3rd Myths & Legends series, Beowulf & Grendel's Mother. She is one of the three antagonists in the poem Beowulf, the other two being Grendel and the dragon. Grendel's mother is recently most well known for being played by Angelina Jolie in the 2007 movie, Beowulf. Estimated to have originated between the eight and eleventh centuries, Beowulf is the longest surviving poem written in Old English. The epic tale of the fearsome warrior and later king blends fantasy with history to build a legend.

Beowulf & Grendel's Mother Coin Design

This is the second coin in the third series of the British myths and legends collection. The first series features the legend of Robin Hood and the second featured King Arthur along with his cohorts. David Lawrence has depicted Beowulf in a medieval setting, fighting a rather ferocious looking Grendel, the swamp monster. Grendel was the first of Beowulf's encounters.
