King Arthur Coin Background

The Royal Mint have introduced a new three coin series inspired by legendary British myths and legends.  This is the first coin in the King Arthur series, celebrating the renowned story of this unique Celtic Briton King. King Arthur, although a fictional character, has been a prominent figure in British mythology since first appearing in Welsh medieval chronicles in the ninth and tenth centuries.  He is rumoured to have fought giants, dragons and other fictional beasts throughout his reign over Camelot. According to English folklore, despite his fictional nature, it is believed that King Arthur fought off Saxon invaders attempting to pillage Britain, leading the Celts against them at the end of the fifth century. The Royal Mint produces King Arthur coins in 1oz Gold and 1oz Silver.

King Arthur Coin Design

This is the first coin in the second series of the British myths and legends collection. The first series features the legend of Robin Hood. King Arthur has been immortalised in David Lawrence’s depiction of the heroic and legendary king, wearing a crown and regal attire, sitting astride a horse and brandishing his almost equally legendary sword, Excalibur.  Camelot Castle, where the Knights of the Round Table held court, is featured in the background.
