South African Krugerrand Coin Background

The South African Krugerrand was first introduced in 1967 and has been one of the most recognisable collector’s coins in the world since. By 1980, the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the global gold coin market.  The Krugerrand was the world’s first bullion coin, at the time, bearing exactly 1 troy ounce of fine gold. Krugerrands are meticulously crafted from 22 ct pure gold to create a superior finish. It was down to the huge success of the Krugerrand that encouraged other countries to mint and issue their own one-ounce gold bullion coins, including the Canadian 1oz Gold coin (in 1979), the Australian 1oz Gold Coin (in 1981), the Chinese 1oz Gold Coin (in 1982), the US 1oz Gold Coin (in 1986), and the British 1oz Coin (in 1987).

South African Krugerrand Coin Design

The reverse design of the coins feature a beautiful prancing springbok, one of South Africa’s national symbols, originally designed and engraved by the famous South African sculptor, Coert Steynberg. The obverse depicts the bust of the then president of the Republic, Paul Kruger. The year 2016 marks the 50th year since the striking of the first Krugerrand (although the coin only became available in 1967). The Krugerrand bullion range is available through Bleyer in 1, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 oz coins which bear the same obverse and reverse design as the original 1967 coins.
