The latest release in The Royal Mint’s Shēngxiào Collection is the 2020 Lunar Year of the Rat. Combining centuries of Chinese tradition with British minting craftsmanship, the collection celebrates the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, or Shēngxiào, and their distinctive characteristics and qualities. Continuing the success of the collection, we are excited to reveal a new bullion coin in the series. In Chinese culture, the rat is thought of as a godly creature, capable of helping humans by predicting natural disasters like earthquakes. The rat is portrayed on a new, secure, micro-dot texture, against a backdrop of peonies, one of China’s best-loved owers. Peonies are a common theme in ancient Chinese artwork. These beautiful owers symbolise wealth, good fortune, prosperity and happiness. People born under this sign are said to be intelligent, adaptable and optimistic.
