25th Anniversary of the Silver Kookaburra

The Silver Kookaburra coins were launched in 1990, quickly becoming a sensation among collectors. In their inaugural year, the limited issue of 300,000 coins was oversubscribed by more than five times, resulting in a complete sellout on the very first day of release. Collectors continue to hold a strong affinity for these coins, thanks in part to the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of the bullion coins produced by The Perth Mint.

Kookaburra Coin Design

The obverse bears the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The outer edge inscription reads “ELIZABETH II”, “AUSTRALIA”, “1 DOLLAR” "2015". The reverse outer edge inscription reads "THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA", "1990-2015", "1OZ .999 SILVER" The coin also includes a P25 mintmark for this year only.

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 in response to the discovery of rich gold deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. The heritage building was situated in the heart of Perth, the capital and largest city of Western Australia.
