Robin Hood This series contains three coins in total which each celebrate a different part of the 825th Anniversary of the Vienna Mint and the ransom paid to Duke Leopold V of Austria (of which was silver) for the release of King Richard the Lionheart of England in 1194 which kickstarted the Vienna Mint. Robin Hood, in English myth, is a well-known legend and is the subject of this coin due to the taxes that were raised in order to pay this massive ransom of 150,000 marks. The raise in taxes caused widespread violent social unrest and it is very possible there was someone similar to Robin Hood in the nature of their ethics. Although he was originally portrayed as an outlaw, the perception of him has been moulded over the centuries into a chivalrous and generous character to those in need. While the coin’s reverse features the suitably dubbed ‘The King of Thieves’, the obverse presents Leopold V’s equestrian seal, which shows the Duke as a military commander on horseback with a shield and a banner. The original image can be found in the Monastery of Heiligenkreuz, near Vienna. All three coins in the series share this design.
