Silver Tuvalu Homer Simpson Coin, 2019

These 1oz Silver Tuvalu Homer Simpson coins were a limited mintage of only 25,000 worldwide and were produced by The Perth Mint. The Simpsons family was first introduced in 1987 and only appeared in 30 seconds segment on The Tracey Ullman Show. Two years later, The Simpsons premiered as a half hour-series and was an instant hit. The series is still seen in 60 countries in 20 different languages. The year 2018 was an important milestone for The Simpsons as it became the longest-running primetime scripted television show ever. The coin’s reverse features The Simpsons iconic character Homer Simpson alongside his favourite word ‘DOH’ above Homer’s catchphrase pose. A half-eaten glazed doughnut (Homer’s favourite food) with sprinkles is beautifully used to replace the letter O in DOH. Also included in the design is The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, Matt Groening’s signature and background of sprinkles from Homer’s famous doughnut. The obverse of the coin bears the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, the coin's weight and fineness and the date 2019.

The Perth Mint Background

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 in response to the discovery of rich gold deposits in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. The heritage building was situated in the heart of Perth, the capital and largest city of Western Australia. It was Australia’s third branch of Britain’s Royal Mint – the others being the Sydney Mint and the Melbourne Mint (both closed). In 1970, the authority for The Perth Mint was transferred to the State of Western Australia. The Perth Mint gold and silver bullion coins have been issued as legal tender under the authority of the Australian Federal Government ever since.
