Panda Coin Background

The Chinese Gold Panda was first issued in 1982 and has a .999% gold content. Panda coins denominated in troy ounces were discontinued by the Chinese mint at the end of 2015 because China adopted the metric system. Panda Coin Design

The Panda coin is different from many other coins. The coins always feature a panda bear in a new position or pose and, with the exception of 2001 and 2002, all coins have an annually-changing design that’s unique to that year. 2022 marks the 40th Anniversary of the Chinese Panda coin. The 2022 design features a 40th anniversary panda logo and pays tribute to the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, which are being held in China.  The obverse always bears the image of the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the earliest building of The Temple of Heaven in Beijing, which is a massive site of worship and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  This round roofed palace is where the emperor held worship ceremonies, praying for good weather and abundant harvests. The coins border band carries the Chinese characters for "People's Republic of China" with the year of issue at the base. The reverse of the coin depicts the denomination, weight and fineness.
