This coin was created to celebrate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. She was the mother of Queen Elizabeth II, the former British sovereign. Also, the widow of King George VI. Ian Rank Broadley worked from photographs which The Queen Mother allowed to be taken for this very purpose. To symbolise The Queen Mother's century, on the reverse of the coin, he included cheering crowds in the background. Those in Victorian dress rejoicing at her birth and those in modern dress celebrating her hundredth year. Below the portrait appears a representation of her signature. The obverse of the coin was also designed by Ian Rank Broadley, this side is paired with the front by instead portraying The Queen Mother's daughter, Queen Elizabeth II wearing a tiara.
